Who I Am

Hi, my name is Joayn Hedges and this year I will turn 53. To assist in my denial of turning another year older, I’m having a birthday bash and you're invited to come along for the ride. This event will combine my love of exercise with a cause that I feel very passionate about.

I’ve been married for 30 years and we have 2 sons and a daughter-in-law. By day I manage a local cafe and I also provide the cakes and slices, so it goes without saying that I love coffee and cake.

But I have always loved to exercise. Growing up I swam and played indoor cricket. I took up tennis at 30 as I thought I was too young for lawn bowls. Currently, I still play tennis, go to our local gym and of course cycling which I discovered in 2009.

I also enjoy attending Church with my friends and family, heading to the beach, everything pink and watching Survivor.

What I'm Doing

I am going to cycle 5300km around Queensland.  Leaving from Victoria Point and heading clockwise.

Yes, five thousand three hundred kilometres. I will be riding for up to 15 hours per day aiming to hit 250km each day, for 21 days.

You may think because I have decided on such a huge ride that I am an elite athlete. The reality is I am just an ordinary person ... someone attempting to achieve the extraordinary for my friends in Zambia.

Why?

In keeping with the 53 theme, 5300km for my 53rd birthday, I would very much like to raise $53000.00 and sponsor 53 kids.

The funds raised and student sponsorships will directly assist Eagles Wings students in their primary, secondary and tertiary education.

I have had the privilege of visiting Eagles Wings campus in Ndola, Zambia, Africa and the one thing that stood out was that the students were so keen to learn. The school is making such a difference in the lives of these students, their families and the local community.

I want more than anything to see vulnerable children realise and reach their God given potential.
